Isi artikel
From a humble rural oAgin of farmers' experiences which saw soils as growth medium for plants, and the simple reckoning by early geologists of soils being wastes of rock weathering, the knowledge of soils had then developed rapidly into a dghtful science. Ihe fast developmenthad been made possible by tbe deep insight gained by soil scientists themselves of the true nature of soils, and their creativeness in adapting theodes, metbodologies and tools of the basic sciences of physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics to soil research. With the renewed perception that soils are not just a medium for plant growth, but also constituting an ecosystem, an essential feature of landscapes, one of the principle components of the environment, and a renewable natural resource, soil science plays an extensive role in the life of people. The services which soil science can offer are no more restActed to agAculture and agAculture-related demands. They include vadous other sectors of human activities as well. The extension of the area of services rendered by soil science which had occurred, or has been happening, or can be expected to take place, requires the rethinking of the soil science tAdarma (three delivery principles). Soil science needs a new paradigm by which it may obtain the best opportunity for development. It involves the revision of the soil science curriculum and the soil research management, and the reodentation of the public services rendered by soil science. The soil science curAculum should give more weight on physics, chemistry, biology (including microbiology), mathematics (including statistics and geostatistics), system analysis, and simulation models design. Concerning research and public service, soil science should be moved from its traditional position in agricultural sciences to earth sciences.
