Originally, distance education system has been developed in Britain since about a century ago. At present, there are many concept about distance education and some of them accentuate on the importance of independence study while the others on the importance of interactive communication or view the distance education as an industrial process. The existance of distance education in hdonesia has been widely recognized since Universitas Terbuka (U I) was established in 1984. As well as the other distance education institution in the word, UT faces some problems, especially about its quality. It means that UT is dealing with the challenges and hopes to improve the quality of course materials, academic staff, examination, etc. However, the emerging of Computer Assisted lnstruenon (CAI), because of its incredible capabilities, seems as a new hope and an altemative for distance education institution for improving its quality of "teaching".
