Isi artikelThe development of social insurance for workers in Indonesia cannot be separated from economic and demographic factors. Economic development and population growth have encouraged financial institutions beyond the banking sectors (insurance companies) to utilise public funding optimally in order to support macroeconomic policies comprehensively and to respond to rapid changes in the society. Trade liberalisation of goods, services, and investments set to begin in the year 2003 has put pressures on insurance industries to develop their competitive advantages through efficiency and professionalism in order to develop alternative social insurance programs. These programs need to be well directed and target oriented, taking into consideration a number of social, economic, and political factors. That is the dynamics of population growth in Indonesia, which is projected to move towards old dependency ratio. Additionally, there is an increase in open unemployment on one side and slow economic growth which cannot be expected to improve quality of life on the other side. These conditions need to be considered in developing social insurance programs for workers in the future. However, unprecedented economic recession beginning in the middle of 1997 seems to have abolished new hope in improving social insurance for most workers in order to enjoy better standard of living.
