Isi artikelThe effect of computer-chip-based technologies on jobs is being felt in a variety of industries and countries, bringing with it fears of job displacement in some cases mixed with hope that, over a longer term, a new burst of economic growth will result leading to higher employment levels. This and the following four articles examine the potential benefits, as well as the problems, posed by computers on the factory floor and in the office. In the first article, the author discusses three of the most widely held views of the relationship between technological progress and the demand for labor. She finds no historical evidence that new technological have resulted in significant job loss. Lynn E. Browne is a vice-presicdent and economist with the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. She has served on a number of public boards and commissions, including the Economic Advisory Committee of the New England Regional Commission and the Governor of Massachusetts' Commission on the Future of Mature Industries. This article is abridged from an article orginally published by the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. The views expressed are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect official positions of that bank or of the Federal Reserve System.
