Isi artikelOne of the major problems facing labour force in Indonesia is low productivity rate. Up until 1990, worker productivity rate in Indonesia grew only at the level of one-half to two-thirds of that in Malaysia and Thailand. Aggravated by economic crisis since the middle of 1997, worker productivity rate in various industrial sectors in Indonesia has indicated a declining trend. A number of social factors, such as industrious life style, position and job status, and job satisfaction, influence worker productivity. Work habits such as strong discipline, punctuality and patience are some determining factors to achieve high productivity rate. Competitive attitudes to gain better achievement is an important ingredient in developing strong inner drives and initiatives to work better. However, low wages, which do not take into account the length of work experience, have a negative influence on workers' morale. Non transparant bonus and performance evaluation systems cause low competitive attitudes among workers. In brief, inharmonious social relations in the workplace creates a situation which is not conducive to develop healthy competition among workers. This triggers low commitment to work achievement, limited initiatives, and even worse skeptical and static attitudes among workers.
