Isi artikelAs the United States has become more integrated into the world economy, issues of structural adjustment have taken on an enhanced importance. The author points out that while the adjustment process is likely to be a "wrenching" experience, it is necessary in order to maintain international competitiveness. He cites historical examples. Pierre S. du Pont IV has been a businessman, state representative, and member of the U.S. Congress. Scion of a prominent American industrial family, he served six years in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he was a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee. He was elected Governor of the State of Delaware in 1976, and reelected in 1980. A fiscal conservative with a strong interest in the problems of jobless young people, he has advised both the Reagan Administration and the Congress on national youth employment policy. This article is adapted from Governor du Pont's remarks at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Georgetown University, in December 1983.
