Isi artikelThe author-one of the world's leading authorities on peaceful atomic energy-suggests that a combination of new nuclear technologies, coupled with institutional changes such as the location of clusters of nuclear power plants at permanent sites where large cadres of experts would be available at all times-could help pave the way for a new era in which many of the public's misgivings about the safety of nuclear energy would be alloyed. Alvin M. Weinberg has been at the forefront of nuclear power development for 40 years-as a former president of the American Nuclear Society, as a former director of the Oak Ridge (Tennessee) National Laboratory, as a member of the National Academy of Sciences, and, currently, as director of the Institute for Energy Analysis at the Oak Ridge Associated Universities. This article is based on Dr. Weinberg's paper, "The Future of Nuclear Energy," which was included in the recently published book Nuclear Power: Both Sides.
