Historical analysis of gender relationship in Batak community indicates that Education plays an important role in bringing about change in the attitude of the people. The Batak community is one clear example of the patrilineal kindship in Indonesia, where the role of male is dominant over female in almost every aspect of social life of the community. After schooling had been introduced by the Dutch government during colonial time, school education, especially for girls, has been recognized as a means to lift ujp the bargaining power of the female position toward the male's in the community. The educated female has now been considered not only as a medium for change in many social norms, but also as an effective mediator between two Batak clans unified through marriage.
