Isi artikelIn the decade since the 1973-1974 oil crisis, significant progress has been made in reducing U.S. and world dependence on petroleum through conservation and the development of alternatives. But at the same time, some of the alternatives have encountered problems of their own. This and the following four artuicles analyze recent developments in energy and suggest possible new paths to still greater progress. In the first article, the author undertakes a global assessment of the role that nuclear power is playing in various nations' energy programs. He finds that in the United States, the economic viability of nuclear power-once heralded as an energy source that would be "tooc heap to meter"-has been greatly eroded, while in some other countries nuclear power has encountered fewer obstacles and its prospects are much brighter. Christopher Flavin is a senior researcher specializing in renewable energy technologies and policies with the Worldwatch Institute, an independent nonprofit organization in Washington, D.C. He is the author of Nuclear Power: The Market Test, from which this article is excerpted. The views expressed are those of the Worldwatch Institute.
