Isi artikelThe global economic downturn from which the world is now recovering turned out to be less severe than had been forecast, and, according to the author, there is no need for a continuing mood of "pessimism." He explains that the recession probably could have been predicted given the need to reduce inflation through monetary restraints. A prominent international economist, Gottfried Haberler is professor of econimics emeritus at Harvard University, with which he has been associated since 1931, and a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research. A native of Austria, Dr. Haberler taught economics and statistics at the University of Vienna, and he has been a consultant to several organizations, including the League of Nations and the Federal Reserve System. This article is excerpted from a chapter in Essays in Contemporary Economic Problems: Disinflation, published by the American Enterprise Institute.
