Isi artikelIndonesian trade union movement that lead to the form of a trade union started since 19th century when Dutch still colonised Indonesia. The movement stopped when there was Japanese invasion, as the Indonesian government forbade its forming and their activities. In the era of Old Order, the trade union regained its chance to do their activities and their membership increased. A lot of competitive trade union then played an important role in fighting for the worker's rights and labour standard in Indonesia. The trade union managed to urge the government to pass 10 laws and ratify 7 ILO's convention. During the New Order era, after 1973, the government tried to change the trade union from a plural union into a single one. Thus, the trade union did not have power to struggle for worker's rights and the labour standard even decreased. In industrial relationship, the workers are frequently in the weak and lost position. The end of the New Order era brought a change in the manpower field as well. The reformation era has returned the trade union into plural union that followed by the rapid development of the trade union. For development of trade union that oriented to worker's right, the government should maintain the plurality and the independence of the trade union. Industrial relationship between workers and entrepreneurs must act as partner in profit, in responsibility and in production, so that industrial peace can be made. Besides, government must be in a neutral position between workers and entrepreneurs.
