Abstract
This study aimed to assess postural working condition for eight packaging workers
and one transportation worker in Packaging Department, PT Yulie Pangan Sentosa. The
postural assessment was conducted by using OWAS (Ovako Working Analysis System)
method since it was simple and it can be used to analyze a wide range of different postures.
An estimate for load handled by the person observed is also made in connection with the
posture. The author use random sampling method to observe workers’ working posture. Six
days was spent to observe eight packaging workers and one transportation worker. The time
spots of sampling were determined by generating random numbers and calculated with the
interval of observation. The observer took photographs on the time spots determined before.
A total of 4158 photographs were collected and then selected so that the non productive task
is not included.
Based on postural assessment with OWAS method, packaging workers and
transportation worker are performing bad working posture. Results show that the Packaging
workers performed their packaging process in a position of bent back and squatting position.
Twenty four percent harmful postures and seventy three percent posture that needing
correction recently were suffered by the packaging workers. Meanwhile, the Transportation
worker had a higher harmful posture as they suffer more than thirty eight percent harmful
postures and forty two percent postures that need correction recently as they work with back
bent and twist posture while lifting heavy objects.
