The reason for individual appraisal in school is based on the belief in the right of children to an education uniquely suited to their needs, interest, and abilities. Although educators have elways known that children differ from one another, their acknowledgment of desireability of differences is a more recent phenomenon. This recent emphasis on individuality and the right of children to an education uniquely appropriate for them forces the school to seek ways of identifying the directon and extent of pupil differences.
