Lower urinary tract symptoms secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) are a common complaint seen by primary care physicians and urologists. Dutasteride is a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor that inhibits the intracellular conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestostrone, thereby decreasing prostate volume. It significantly improves current symptoms and reduces the risk of long-term complications of BPH.
