For a decade or so the departments of German in Taiwan have been sending their students to Germany to improve their target language on the spot. For most of the students it is their first prolonged stay and formal learning experience in that country. Will the original images of Germany and all things German these students have picked up along the line be destroyued or strengthened by their intensive contact with the local people? Are these images a help or a barrier to their learning in the host country? Will the experiences of living, learning and interacting with Germans as well as the encounter with German culture change their original impressions of the people and the country? Could future classes of students profit from the experiences of those who have been there? This study tries to answer these questions by analyzing a questionnaire conducted among the students of German departments at six universities in Taiwan.
