In the present paper I would like both to explore how this counterproductive influence of educational practices can extend to the university, as evidenced by scholarly publications addressed mainly to the university student, and to suggest a particular alternative approach that allows the student to engange actively with the text in reconstructing its meaning, namely its analysis through the tools developed by the school of linguistics known as Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL).
