Abstract
The application of communicative approach (CA) in the teaching of English throughout the world including Indonesia nowadays is no longer a new thing. In Indonesia CA has been adopted since the implementation of The 1984 Curriculum continued with The 1994 Curriculum, The 2004 Curriculum, The 2006 Curriculum, and now The KTSP Curriculum for both Junior and Senior High Schools. The problem is whether the teaching of English has really applied the CA and therefore the assessment also focuses on the communicative competence (CC). The objective of this paper is to trace the concept of communicative language teaching (CLT) arid communicative language testing (CL Test) and to recommend what and how to assess the English communicative competence of the students.
