Abstract
Product safety is always an important issue in developing countries. Developing countries are exposed to unethical conduct of the industries that make use of the developing countries as their dumping places for substandard goods. The tragedies of Seveso and Bhopal or of Thalidomide show how rapidly and destructively those consequences can strike. This does not include the less documented or non-documented cases. Globalisation has worsened these phenomenon. With trade liberalisations that encourage the free movements of goods, more substandard goods will enter into the market of the developing countries. Preventive measures must be taken in order to ensure the safety of products. This paper will analyse the relevant consumer protection legislations of Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia namely the Consumer Protection Act 1999, the Consumer Protection Act 1979 and the Law On Consumer Protection Act 1999 respectively. The aim of this paper is to scutinise the product safety provisions in those acts in order to identify legal measures taken by those countries.
