Isi artikel
A new challenge to the international economic community arose recently when a number of developing countries encountered difficulties in meeting payments on debt they had contracted with commercial banks. Origins of the debt problem, and possible solutions for it, are examined in this and the following three articles. In the first article, a prominent economist points out that commercial bank lending has proved increasingly important to the social and economic evolution of many developing countries. Despite a recent fall-off in bank lending, the author believes that as economic recovery gains speed and current difficulties have been cleared up, lending to LDCs will resume on a substantial scale. An adviser and consultant to the Inter-American, African, Asian, and Nordic Development Banks, Irving S. Friedman formerly served as chief economist for the World Bank and as senior vice-president with Citibank. This article originially appeared under the title "Private Banking and International Debt" in SAIS Review, published by the Johns Hopkins University School fo Advanced International Studies.
