Isi artikelChanges in the composition of U.S. trade since World War II are perhaps the best example of the flexibility of the U.S. economy-its ability to move labor and capital resources between sectors in response to competitive pressure form the world economy. The author explains that this flexibility provides opportunities for growth in real income as U.S. industr is transformed along lines of comparative advantage. William H. Branson is professor of economics and international affairs at the Woodrow Wilson School, Princeton University. He has served as a staff economist with the President's Council of Economic Advisers and as a consultant to numerous organizations, including the World Bank, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, and the U.S. Federal Reserve Board. This article is based on a speech prepared by Dr. Branson, "Trade and Structural Adjustment in the U.S. Economy: Response to International Competition," for a conference on Structural Changes in the World Economy sponsored by the American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research and the Institute for Economic Studies, Clark University.
