Fred Bergsten is director of the Institute for International Economics, a private Washington-based research organization. From 1977 to 1981, Dr. Bergsten was Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for International Affairs, funcitoning as Under Secretary for Monetary Affairs during the last year of that period. He is the author of numerous articles and some 15 books on international economic issues, including Toward a New World Trade Policy and The United States in the World Economy.
