Isi artikelThe awesome outpouring of statistics describing U.S. economic conditions is a useful stream of evidence about current economic behavior, but, in the opinion of the author, provides only a limited guide to explaining the forces that drive the structure of the economy and of what those forces portend for the future. Albert T. Sommers is a senior fellow and economic counselor with The Conference Board. For 13 of his more than 35 years with that organization, he served as its chief economist, advising hundreds of companies on economic conditions and the future course of the U.S. economy. This article is based on a chapter in Mr. Sommer's recent book, The U.S. Economy Demystified: What the Major Economic Statistics Mean and Their Significance for Business.
