Isi artikelAn academic economist traces the important trends in energy conservation that have taken palce since the first oil embargo, pointing out that while the economic effectiveness of conservation has been proved, shifts in energy prices-such as a significant decline in the price of oil-could produce "additional surprising changes in the level and mix of energy demand." William W. Hogan is professor of political economy at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, where he also serves as chairman of the Public Policy Program and as director of the Energy and Environmental Policy Center. This article is abridged from a chapter on "Patterns of Energy Use" in the book Energy Conservation: Successes and Failures.
