Isi artikel
Examining economic trends over a century, the former president of the American Economic Association explains that despite numerous economic fluctuatuions and upheavals, achievement of a high level of innovation and productivity by one country has almost inevitably spread similar benefits to other countries in what now constitutes the Western industrialized world. A well-known economist and educator, William J. Baumol holds joint appointments as professor of economics at princeton University and New York University. He has written numerous books on economic theory and public policy, including, most recently, Economics: Principles and Policy (with A.S. Blinder). This article is abridged from an economic research report, "Productivity Growth, Convergence and Welfare: What the Long Run Data Show," issued by the C.V. Starr Center for Applied Economics at New York University.
