A well-known economist and educator, William J. Baumol holds joint appointments as professor of economics at princeton University and New York University. He has written numerous books on economic theory and public policy, including, most recently, Economics: Principles and Policy (with A.S. Blinder). This article is abridged from an economic research report, "Productivity Growth, Convergence and Welfare: What the Long Run Data Show," issued by the C.V.
