Richard G. Lugar is the senior Republican Senator from the State of Indiana. Before his election to the Senate in 1976, Senator Lugar was a businessman and, from 1967 to 1975, the mayor of the City of Indianapolis, Indiana, during which time he served as president of the National League of Cities and as vice-president of the Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations.
