The chief U.S. trade negotiator explains the reasons for new initiatives in U.S. trade policy and presents his views on how a new round of multilateral trade negotiations will benefit many nations, including developing countries. This interview was conducted by Stewart W. Ramsey, editor-in-chief of Economic Impact, and by Jon Schaffer and Jeanne Holden, economics writers with the U.S. Information Agency. Clayton Yeutter became United States Trade Representative in July 1985. As a member of President Reagan's cabinet. Ambassador Yeutter is responsible for the development and execution of U.S. trade policy. Before being named to his present position, he was president and chief executive officer of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, the world's second largest futures market. During the 1970s, he served with the U.S. Governement as Deputy Special Trade Representative and in the Department of Agriculture as Assistant Secreatary for International Affairs and Commodity Programs and Assistant Secreatary for Marketing and Consumer Services.
