Isi artikelThe rise of protectionism, possibilities for further trade liberalization through a future round of multilateral trade negotiations, and the implications of a new U.S. trade policy are among the prominent trade-related subjects discussed in this and the following five articles. In this first article, the author links the growth of nontariff barriers in recent years to other crucial policy controversies such as the rise in the value of the dollar, the world debt problem, the issue of domestic industrial policies to assist in structural adjustment, and the future of the international economic system. A professor and chairman of the Department of Economics at Fordham University, Dominick Salvatore has lectured and written extensively on international economics, microeconomic theor, and econometrics. He has been a consultant to a number of private organizations, as well as to the United Nations Project on African Development Strategy. This article is based on Dr. Salvatore's introductory chapter for a special issue of The Journal of Policy Modeling.
