Isi artikelThe author explains that the United States is experiencing a record deficit in its foreign trade largely because of the appreciation of the dollar and the economic recovery that is taking place, which have resulted in an increase in imports at the same time that U.S. exports to many developing countries have fallen off as a result of their debt problems. Given these developments, his assessment is that U.S. industry "has borne up well thus far." Norman S. Fieleke is vice-president and economist in charge of international research with the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. He has also held positions with several U.S. Government agencies, including the Office of Management and Budget, the Office of the Special Representative for Trade Negotiations, and the U.S. International Trade Commission. This article was originally published under the title "The Foreign Trade Deficit and American Industry." The views expressed are those of the author and do not necessarily represent official positions of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston or the Federal Reserve System.
