Isi artikelIn Europe and in the United States, two new and imaginative movements are under way that may represent the dawning of the postindustrial society's work patterns. One, centered in Europe but also beginning to appear in the United States, is "flextime," a new gliding-hours system which currently permits hundreds or thousands of European workers virtually to set their own work schedule each day to accomodate both job and personal requirements. Staff writer Dirk Schaeffer of the European magazine Vision reviews the shift from tradition on that side of the Atlantic, while American management Association-in a report based on extensive research by consultant Kenneth Wheeler and associates Richard Gurman and Dale Tarnowieski-studies the development in the United Staes of the four-day workweek, which Nobel laureate Paul A. Samuelson has called "a momentous social invention."
