Isi artikelIn 1996, Indonesia was the sixth largest soybean producer in the world. This record was gained with a contribution of 1.517 milliom tons (1.2%) of world's total soybean production. Ironically, the high rate of domestic soybean consumption, which reached 11.4 kg capita (2.263 million tons in 1996), has forced Indonesia to import soybean to the large volume of about 600,000 to 800,000 tons costing USD 180,000 to USD 251,000 annually. In consequence, amny companies especially in animal feedstuff, have gone out of business as the rising production costs cannot be covered by the selling price in the domestic market.
