Extensive calcification of the intervertebral ligaments, bilateral ossification of the outer layer of the annulus fibrosis (forming bony bridges called marginal syndesmophytes), and apophyseal joint ankyloses all gave the appearance of a bamboo spine, as shown in Panel A.
