The first quarter of 1997 was the last quarter of the 1996/1997 budget year, the third year of the Sicth Five-Year Development Plan (REPELITA VI) 1994/95-1998/99. As in each of the REPELITAs before, in which a general election took place in the fourth year, in 1997 a general election was also held to elect people's representatives for the DPR (the Indonesian Legislative Assembly). The DPR members along with the members of the People's Consultative Council (MPR) will organize the MPR General Assembly in March 1998 to determine the State Guidelines (GBHN) which will be the basis of the Seventh Five-Year Development Plan (REPELITA VII) 199/2000-2003/2004.
