The traditional emphasis on higher wages and fringe benefits, which has characterized by top U.S. trade union priorities in the past, is gradually yielding to job and income guarantees, says the author, an experienced labor specialist. He also notes that a trend toward greater interest in employee participation in the management of firms. He raises the question whether the United States may be moving closer to the West European pattern of more secure employment and income, and possibly "codetermination" as employee participation in management is called. George McIsaac is director of the large U.S. management consulting firm of McKinsey Company, with responsibility for thet firms's advice and services affecting labor relations. Now a president of Washington D.C., he has worked with a range companies in with the United States and Europe.
