Isi artikelPrivatization by itself is likely to lead to some gains in the efficiency of what are now public sector enterprises, say the authors, but they believe that more significant gains will result if public or privatized enterprises are subjected to competitive pressures and if the incentive and control mechanism for management are improved. A senior economist in the Asian Department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Richard Hemming has also worked for the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. Ali M. ansoor is an economist with the IMF's Fiscal Affairs Division. This article is based on a forthcoming IMF "Occasional Paper" titled "Privatization and Public Enterprises." The views expressed here are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Executive Board or officials of the International Monetary Fund.
