On the absis of an in-depth analysis of the output, employment, and productivity of U.S. industry, the author concludes that the decline in manufacturing's share of employment and other strutural shifts reflect worldwide patterns of economic development, rather than any intrinsic factors with the U.S. industrial base. M.S. McUsic, an economist who is currently a student at the Harvard University Law School, was a senior research assistant wuith th Federal Reserve Bank of Boston when this artilcle was written.
