The term "competitive space" is applied rather tentatively since it may be perceived as a mildly loaded term -- especially from someone who now works for a commercial firm. But for at least the last ten years of my professional life in academic libraries we have seen higher education recognize itself as an important economic sector for our country’s continued prosperity, and we have heard repeatedly that the new economy is based on knowledge.
