Isi artikelWith economists a frequent target of public blame for neither averting nor proptly curing the world's economic malaise, the profession has loabored incresingly under a cloud of self-criticism and uncertainty. A champion sorely neede to renew its confidence appeared most appropriately in the person of Walter Heller as he recently relinquished the presidency of the American Economic Association. Professor Heller, whose reputation was fashioned during the golden economic era of the early 1960s, answered doubters with a ringing declaration of the positive accomplishments of economics. The son of German immigrants, Dr. Heller has achieved high distinctions as an academic, governmental official, author and consultant. Of the many tributes paid him, the best known remains that of President Lyndon B. Johnson, who once said Dr. Heller was the only economist he could understand.
