Isi artikelAnalyzing recent protectionist activities, the author acharacterizes as "exaggerated" claims by some that today's global economy increasingly resembles that of the highly nationalistic, anti-free trade 1930s. He sugests that agreement needs to be reached on avoiding further restrictions and on undertaking multilateral trade negotiations to liberalize existing restrictions. An internationally known economic adviser to government and industry, Bela Balassa is professor of political economy at The Johns Hopkins University and consultant to the World Bank. Dr. Balassa is the author of numerous publications in the fields of international trade, economy development and comparative economic systems, including, most recently, The Newly-Industrializing Countries in the World Economy and Development Strategies in Semi-Industrial Economies.
