Isi artikelPast waves of automation have created dislocations in the U.S. workplace, but these have been distributed throughout the labor force in such a way as to bring general social progress and such benefits as shorter workweeks, more vacation time, longer training and education, and earlier retirement. The author foresee a continuation of this trend, assuming a healthy rate of economic growth during a period of innovation and increasing automation. Sar A. Levitan is research professor of economics and director of the Center for Social Policy Studies at the George Washington University in Washington D.C. Johnson is a rresearch associate at the Center for Social Policy Studies. They are the authors of Second Thoughts on Work, from which this article was excerpted.
