An important member of the Reagan Administration's economic team explains that certain industrial and targeting policies of foreign governments can hurt employment opportunities and impede the ability of U.S. industry, as well as the ability of industry in other nations, to compete effectively in the international marketplace. He recommends that efforts be made to deal with these practices through negotiations in multilateral forums. The interview was conducted by Stewart W. Ramsey, Economic Impact's editor-in-chief. Malcolm Balridge has been head of the U.S. Department of Commerce since 1981. He also chairs the President's Cabinet Counci on Commerce and Trade. Prior to his appointment, Secretary Balridge had been associated with Scovill Manufacturing Company for 18 years, serving as its president adn chief executive officer from 1963 to 1969 and its chairman of the board from 1969 to 1981.
