According to the author's analysis U.S. comparative advantage is changing, reflecting a gradual move toward production of high-technology products and away from other manufactured goods. He ectimates that employment and output in manufacturing will performed well in the next decade, assuming a sustained economic recovery and a more competitive dollar exchange rate. Robert Z. Lawrence is an economist and senir fellow of The Brookings Institution, a Washington D.C., public policy research organization, where his field of concentration is competition in international trade. He is also professorial lecturer at the School of Advanced International Studies of The John Hopkins University. This article is drawn from a presentation prepared by Dr. Lawrence for the Brookings Panel on Economic Activity held in Washington in April 1983.
