Isi artikelsurveying the spectrum of measures traditionally used to combat inflation-ranging from fiscal and monetary actions to wage and price controls-the author points out that no single one has proved universally successful because inflation is caused by a vast "concatenation of circumstances." He believes that in the future infationary pressures will have to be reduced by curbing demand thriugh fundamental shifts; for example, toward population stabilization in the developing world and away from the consumer-oriented society in the industrialized world. Born in 1935 in New Jersey, Robert Fuller is a senior researcher at the Worldwatch Institute, an independent research organization in Washington. With degrees from the University of Chicago and Princeton, Dr. Fuller has held a number of academic positions including that of president of Oberlin College in Ohio.
