Isi artikelSurveying the history of the developing world, the author finds that accelerate economic growth for many LDCs began in the years between 1870 an 1914-which is considerably earlier than is sometimes believed. Often, the growth takeoff was based on tropical exports and occured despite colonialis. Dr. Reynolds also points out that in general, in both the 19th and 20th centuries, the growth of developing countries has been closely related to that of industrialized countries and to international flows of goods, finance and technology. A member of Yale University faculty since 1945, and for many years chairman of Yale's economics department, Dr. Reynolds was born in Canada and earned his Ph.D. in economics at Harvard University in 1936. This article was drawn from an address to the 1979 annual meeting of the American Economic Association.
