Isi artikelThis Nobel prizewinning agricultural economist describes how some forms of government interference distort normal agricultural economies, either to be disadvantage of farmers or of food-consumers. He points out that in some developed countries policies discriminate against large urban populations by keeping food prices artificially high; while policies followed by some low income countries with large rural populations deliberately underprice food products for the benefit of a small urban populace. Born on a farm in the agricultural state of South Dakota, Dr. Schultz studied agricultural economics at midwestern universities, and served for 13 years on the faculty of Iowa State College-one of the best-known agricultural training institutions in United States. A well-known author and lecturer on agricultural subjects, Dr. Schultz was named in 1978 a Nobel laurate in economics, sharing this honor with Sir Arthur Lewis.
