Isi artikel
Countries seeking faster development today would be wise to emphasize technological change-perticularly in agriculture-with international trade serving as "lubricating oil" rather than as fuel for growth, says this Nobel prizewinning economist from an LDC background. Dr. Lewis points out that it is through transformation of the food sector that agricultural surpluses can be obtained to feed an expanding urban industrial population. Born in 1915 on the small Caribbean island of St. Lucia, in what was known then as the British West Indies, Dr. Lewis was educated and later taught at the UNiversity of Manchester and the LOndon School of Economics. He has been professor of political economy at Princeton University, where he delivered a series of lectures-now available in book forn under the title, Evolution of the International Economic Order-from which this article is drawn. For his extensive work in analyzing LDC economic problems, Dr. Lewis shared the 1979 Nobel prize in economics with Dr. Theodore Schultz.
