Isi artikel"Each of us will have to use less oil and pay more for it," the U.S. public was told by President Carter when he announced a tough new program designed to decrease the growing U.S. dependence on foreign oil. This article descrives how the United States and much of industrialized world, having built their economies heavily on the abse of cheap and abundant oil, now must cope with the challenges of a downing postpetroleum era. This article was adapted from Great Decisions: 1980, a study handbook annually prepared by the Foreign Policy Association. This nonpartisan, nonprofit, educational organization is founded in 1918 is dedicated to developing greater public understanding of foreign policy issues confronting the United States, and more citizen expressions of opinion on these issues.
