Isi artikelPointing out that about one million million new jobs must be created by the year of 2000 if world unemployment and "underemployment" are to be eradicated, the author argues persusaively in favor of the development of small-scale, labor-intensive technologies, particularly in the developing world. Even in the industrialized world, he believes greater emphasis on development of solar energy technologies would contribute more to higher levels of employment than would construction of giant capital-intensive power stations. A specialist in technology-oriented issues, Colin Norman is a senior researcher with Worldwatch Institute, an independent non profit research organization created to analyze and focus attention on global problems. He was Washington correpondent for Nature, a well-known British science magazine from 1971 until 1977 and has written extensively on science, technology and public policy.
