An intellectual giant who influenced economis thought over two generations, Professor MOrgenstern was born in Germany in 1902. He obatined his doctorate in political science at the University of Vienna in 1925 and began working as a journalist before becoming an adviser to the Austrian government. He then joined the New York University faculty, and until his death on July 26, 1977, he also aheaded the research organization of Mathematics, Inc., which he founded, at Princeton, New Jersey.
