In selecting Dr. Schlensinger to be the coordinator of federal energy programs, President Carter brought back to government service a man who, even his criics conced, posseses one of the keenest intellects that has focused on government problems in recent times. Harvard-educated, Dr. Schlesinger taught at the University of Virginia and acted as agovernment consultant until 1963 when he joined the Rand Corporation, a national security "third tank" in Santa Monica, California. He then joined the federal Bureas of the Budget as assistant director and thereafter became chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, director of the Central Intelligence Agency and Secretary of Defense. In this interview with Washington journalist Martin Agronsky, Dr. Sclesinger covers a wide range of topics associated with his new Cabinet-level position, Secretary of the Depatment of Energy.
