Citing the enormous gains made by the developng cointries in the last quarter century, the autho, who is president of the group of institutions known as World Bank, expresses a belief that with expanded trade and greater access to the capital, the LDCs can further accelerate their economic growth in the future. Robert S. McNamara has pursued an unusually wide-ranging career as private businessman, academic professor, and government official. He joined Ford Motor Company in 1949, rising to company president in 1960; the following year he became U.S. Secretary of Defense in the Kennedy administration, serving in that capacity until 1968, when he became President of World Bank. This article is excerpted from his address to the World Bank and International Monetary Fund meetings in September 1977.
