Robert S. McNamara has pursued an unusually wide-ranging career as private businessman, academic professor, and government official. He joined Ford Motor Company in 1949, rising to company president in 1960; the following year he became U.S. Secretary of Defense in the Kennedy administration, serving in that capacity until 1968, when he became President of World Bank.
